First Date

Through Witbank, Middleburg, Machadadorp,
the road descends to valleys and to hills.
Fields of sugar form the weft and warp
of lower tapestries. A torrent spills
beside us. It’s the dream our stream fulfils.

Then on, to Nelspruit, huddling in the rocks,
Matsulu, Malalane and Hectorspruit.
Komatipoort will turn us north. Our stocks
of joy rise as we the near the Crocodile Gate.
But first, Ngwenya. It feels like your first date.
(to be continued)

Gosh Roger, I can’t keep up with you, and, the travels! I maybe be lagging a little, but please don’t wait for me – keep going. Sadly, I do not have a ‘poetic soul’, but am enjoying the journey.
