Secret of the River

‘To the left. Can you see?’ I say: ‘I know.’
Out across the flood plain—muddy red,
our first view of the locals—great white rhino.
The moment pierced my heart. I think it fed
a prayer I’d mostly call mere thanks instead.

The sunrise is another place, defined
as much by light as temperature and sounds.
The secret of the river’s state of mind—
a calculus of crocs, fish, reeds—rebounds
against its banks. The sun begins its rounds.
(to be continued)
